Dugald River mine is one of the world’s top 10 Zinc mine operations, which has been producing zinc concentrate for our clients around the world since 2017.

In April 2023, our commitment to a sustainable future saw the beginning of the Dugald River Solar Farm operations, supplying a third of the mine’s power, and reducing emissions by 33%; this is just the start of our renewable energy transition.

Senior Metallurgist

The Senior Metallurgist leads and oversees a panel of the site’s metallurgical team, providing onsite expert technical support across all surface processing operations to ensure the achievement of Safety, Production (Volume), and Cost targets.

The role is responsible for the successful completion of assigned metallurgical projects and operational tasks, ensuring continuous process optimisation and performance improvement.

As a key member of the Site Leadership Team, the Senior Metallurgist also provides critical backup support to the Superintendent – Processing Support, including attending onsite leadership meetings and overseeing in field team activities.

 

The Senior Metallurgist is responsible for establishing and promoting behaviours and team culture aligned with MMG values, driving accountability, continuous improvement, and high performance within the metallurgy team.

This role will be based on an 8/6, bus in bus out (BIBO) from Cloncurry or Mt Isa or fly in fly out (FIFO) from Townsville or Brisbane.

Qualifications Skills and Competencies:

  • At least 5 years of site-based postgraduate metallurgy experience, ideally in Pb/Zn base metals flotation.
  • Relevant bachelor’s degree (chemical/ metallurgical engineering)
  • Solid understanding of core processes within Pb/Zn concentrators, including crushing, grinding, base metals flotation, thickening, dewatering, and paste operations.
  • Knowledge of metallurgical accounting processes and practices.
  • Experience with plant trials, surveys, laboratory test work techniques, and statistical analysis of results.
  • Demonstrates strong teamwork skills, with the ability to listen, engage, influence, and execute effectively.
  • Skilled and adaptable in technology systems (PI Historian, statistics software, databases) and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Power BI) and coding capabilities.
  • Skilled in statistical analysis of process data to diagnose and improve plant performance.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Lead in SHREC by ensuring all tasks are completed in line with the Safe Task Management framework.
  • Lead the technical and operational team to deliver safety, volume, and cost targets.
  • Independently troubleshoot issues (spreadsheets, equipment process) and initiate and lead investigations (5 whys).
  • Provide technical leadership, coaching, mentoring, and training to the metallurgy team, including graduates and vacation students.
  • Efficiently manage team performance, rostering, and leave to ensure smooth business operations.
  • Lead change management processes, ensuring all appropriate steps are followed.
  • Manage technical cost centres, ensuring expenditures align with the budget.
  • Management of short to long term projects as allocated by the Processing Support Superintendent.
  • Management of metallurgy responsibilities (e.g. EOM accounting, met models, routine samples, mineralogy, geomet) as allocated by the Processing Support Superintendent and as per roster requirements.
  • Assist with site chemical management as the Chemical Facilitator.
