Rosebery is an underground polymetallic base metal mine located in the township of Rosebery in Tasmania, Australia. The mine is a deep, sub-level open stoping operation with complex mining conditions.

The Rosebery Mine has been at the heart of the Rosebery community since 1936 and is one of Tasmania’s largest and oldest continuously operating, underground mines producing zinc, copper and lead concentrates, as well as gold doré.

It supports approximately 500 employees and their families, has a strong community focus and engages a wide range of local businesses from across Tasmania in its supply chain boosting the economy of the West Coast of Tasmania and beyond.

The mine has a strong future, with extensive exploration activities which have continued to grow the resource and require mine planning beyond 10 years of continued operation.

MMG Rosebery has an office in Burnie (Tasmania), giving employees the flexibility to work from there when they are not required onsite.

Senior Safety Advisor

Reporting to the Manager - Safety Health Training and Security this position is responsible for the provision of safety leadership in the field, promoting site compliance with corporate and site safety standards and initiatives, implement safety directives that improve safety performance, ensure site safety policies and procedures as per the legislative requirements.

It will also see you manage security and emergency preparedness and response and the coordination of the site incident and event management system, to provide ongoing support and training.

This position is offered on a 5:2 / 4:3 roster, residential to Rosebery or DIDO with relocation support

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Provide guidance and support the Rosebery Operations to create and maintain a safety culture that fosters continual improvement of systems and contributes to an injury free workplace.
  • Support Occupational Health Nurse (OHN) as required to promote and implement health programs, complete investigations, and implement initiatives.
  • General Safety, Security and Emergency Response (ER) Advisor duties such as reporting, incident investigations, risk assessments, safety document management, planning and supporting emergency scenario training, equipment checks and maintenance of emergency systems and Emergency Response team leaders’ responsibilities.
  • Maintain Safety, Security and ER policies, procedures, guides, and response plans in line with relevant legislation.
  • Provide support to Supervisors, Superintendents in risk management and safety processes, including timely incident reporting in the Incident and Event Management System (IEM), review of safety information, resolution of complex safety issues with stakeholders. and coaching for improvement.
  • Conduct and coordinate employee safety and emergency response training in areas such as safety laws and regulations, including the selection and use of safety equipment.
  • Facilitate and/or support investigations for incidents and near misses to determine causes, install preventative measures and SMART actions to mitigate the risk or recurrence
  • Actively participate in Health and Safety Committee meetings and assist to implement initiatives. Provide information and guidance to Safety representatives.
  • Provide support for periods of leave and afterhours management of injuries and emergencies as required.
  • Manage the day-to-day tasks for the Emergency Response Co-ordinator and ensure equipment is inspected, tested, calibrated to maintain preparedness.
  • Manage the monitor the day-to-day tasks for the Security and Emergency Officers which includes site entry and administration control (SEAC)

About You:

  • Minimum of Cert IV qualification and complimentary certificates in WHS or equivalent.
  • Trainer and Assessor Cert IV and Security Licence - desirable
  • Drug and alcohol testing training – desirable and Cert IV Health Care (Ambulance) or equivalent – desirable
  • Base working knowledge of the applicable legislation – Work Health and Safety (WHS) Act and Regulations (Tasmania) and Mines Work Health and Safety (Supplementary Requirements) Regulations.
  • Previous experience in operational mining/heavy/construction industry highly desirable
  • Previous exposure to health and hygiene programs
  • Experience as an Emergency First Responder
  • Working knowledge in Safety Management systems.
  • Strong report writing and presentations skills.
  • Commitment to the philosophy of continuous improvement and an injury free / zero harm work environment
  • A willingness to work collaboratively as a team and support the Company Values
  • A manual C Class driver’s license
  • First aid certificate – Desirable
  • Ability to pass a Police Clearance, Pre employment Medical and DAS.
