We’re looking for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to drive ground control strategies, provide expert geotechnical analysis, and support safe, efficient mining operations across diverse and challenging environments.

Dugald River mine is one of the world’s top 10 Zinc mine operations, which has been producing zinc concentrate for customers around the world since 2017.
The mine is committed to a low-carbon future. In April 2023 the Dugald River Solar Farm began operations, supplying a third of the mine’s power, and reducing emissions by 33% and this is just the start of its renewable energy transition.
Dugald River employs around 750 employees and contractors on a mix of fly-in, fly-out and local residential basis. The village provides all the amenities including a gym, with a women’s only area, a tennis court, swimming pool, walking track and entertainment area.
Senior Geotechnical Engineer
Reporting to the Mine Technical Services Superintendent, the Senior Geotechnical Engineer is to lead the Geotechnical team, ensuring correct and professional application of geotechnical principles to the planning and operation of the Dugald River Mine, so that compliance with company standards for Ground Control are achieved and maintained.
The role is available on a FIFO (Brisbane or Townsville) or drive-in drive-out basis (DIDO) from the Cloncurry or Mount Isa Districts. The role will operate on an 8/6, 4/3 roster.
With demonstrated experience as a Senior Geotechnical Engineer within underground mining, you will have well-developed skills and personal attributes including the following:
- An unwavering commitment to workplace safety.
- Minimum of 6 years in underground and open pit mining, particularly in the area of rock mechanics
- Experience in geotechnical data collection and processing
- Demonstrated ability in the identification, analysis and resolution of rock mechanics issues
- Strong communication, negotiation and influencing capabilities.
- Ability to engage stakeholders effectively in technical and operational roles.
- Experience in related software packages including Deswik, Rocscience, RS3 and IMS.
- Tertiary qualification/s in either Civil, Geotechnical and/or Mining Engineering or Geology is preferred.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Lead & mentor team overseeing their development and projects undertaken.
- Develop & maintain standards relating to ground control, support, mining methods and extraction sequencing.
- Ensure that the Ground Control Management Plan is developed, implemented and maintained to applicable standards.
- Develop, maintain, and monitor systems associated with ground support, rock deformations, stress, seismicity & QAQC programs.
- Undertake geotechnical analysis utilising Rock Mass Classification systems, empirical methods and numerical modelling.
- Conduct formal reviews of stope performance focusing on rock mechanics issues.
- Oversee systems & performance relating to backfill, including QAQC.
- Provide input into mine planning to ensure excavation designs, sequence, pillars, ground support etc. are appropriate to local conditions.
- Work with key stakeholders in technical services and operations to optimise plans an production based on a continuous improvement & proactive mindset.
- Provide geotechnical engineering advice and input into mine design and long term planning.
